Never in a million years did I think that I would be dating a foreign guy but I was lucky enough to snag myself an European fella but I got damn lucky. I know there are a ton of girls who would love to be in my place. Dating someone from a country other than your own can be a real adventure. The fascination begins with his sexy accent or the way he mangles your native language. Sometimes the differences are too much or hopefully your relationship works out perfectly and you live happily ever after. Here are a few good and bad things about dating a foreigner. Side note: How cute is this guy on the left? Image from @MecsMetroParis on Instagram!
You Feel Lost and Confused at Family or Friend Gatherings
Of course if you two are dating and he adores you, he’s going to want to introduce you (show you off) to his friends and family, most of whom are probably French and don’t speak a lot of English. If you’re like me, and don’t completely understand the language fluently yet, these kinds of events can make for difficult situations… especially when there’s laughing involved. Are they laughing at me? What are they talking about? Why does no one speak ENGLISH?!?!? What I’ve found helpful is to bond over alcohol and food. And in general if you are bubbly, outgoing and make an effort to get along with them, they will reciprocate. Most likely, some more than others.
That Broken English is Adorable AF
Whether it’s a fumble over a word from time to time or they mistakenly call something by the wrong name, it’s so adorable! Also, the way they speak generally sounds more fancy and cool. Why don’t we talk like that anymore?
There Will ALWAYS Be Someone Who Thinks It’s About a Green Card
Not everyone wants to live in the United States!! Have you ever considered how painful it is for them that they are leaving their family and their loved ones to move across the world to be with the person they love? That they can’t have the best of both worlds but they chose you over their own family?
You Get to Learn About Another Country and It’s Cultures
As you may or may not have noticed, I am Indian and my boyfriend is French. So we both get the chance to learn about each other’s countries and languages. It’s fun to hear them speak a different language and how they pronounce certain words.
You Have to Listen
When there’s a slight language barrier combined with cultural differences, you have to both listen and pay attention more than you would with a fellow native. It’s actually really good for your relationship.
Patience is a Virtue
It takes a lot of patience to listen THAT much and work out any issues that might arise from those aforementioned cultural differences. Sometimes you’re gonna want to kill them and ask yourself why on earth are you dating but you have to step back and remember how hard it is to learn a new language and they are doing they best they can!
Foreign Romance > American Romance
I’m sure this can’t be said for every country out there, but when it comes to dating a European, it’s like a wake-up call to every one of your senses. There’s also all that kissing in public… have you been to Paris in the springtime?
You are a pretty lucky guy or gal if you date a foreigner. Getting to divide your time between two countries, the cultural immersion, and listening to that accent all the time does make for an exciting time. That’s a picture of my boyfriend and I on our trip to Denver in April of 2016. I look like a cool cat. I think my boyfriend is trying the Tyra smize.
